What is Make A Move?
At Worthy Retail U, our Make A Move 1-ON-1 and Group Coaching for Retail Leaders coaching platform is a safe space where retail leaders can express the good, the bad and the ugly about their current leadership role.
Here’s the harsh truth! - Retail workers are quitting at record rates!

Thirty-six percent of retail workers indicated that they were dissatisfied as compared to 29 percent of workers in other industries. In addition, only 42 percent of retail workers reported satisfaction with their jobs while 50 percent of workers in other industries reported that they were satisfied.
The top three reasons:
1
Poor Leadership – Poor retail leadership can be characterized by a lack of direction, vision, and decision-making skills. This can lead to a disorganized and ineffective retail operation, which can result in low employee morale, poor customer service, and financial difficulties.
2
No Path to Promotion – Retail leaders desire growth more than any other industry. If a company doesn’t provide a clear path for leadership and positional growth, high potential leaders will leave for other opportunities.
3
Pay – Pay is a primary concern of most workers, especially for those working in retail. Nearly 59 percent of retail workers indicated that they were dissatisfied with their pay and 51 percent of workers in all industries said they were dissatisfied with their pay.

Devise: Three Strategies to Make A Move
Make-A-Move strategy is based on three different strategies to make a move in your career: Moving UP in your company, moving ON to another company, and moving OUT to create opportunities of your own.
Step 1: Make A Move-UP
The idea of moving UP in your company is not just about understanding where you are, your communication, and how you lead people. It is also about understanding what will change when you move up to the next level and preparing to shift your mindset to align with your new role.
The Make A Move-UP strategy will help you:
- Pull out your track record in leadership and other aspects of your life to show your skills, abilities, achievements, and area that you have streamlined to move up.
- Prove that you have outgrown your current position and have the capacity to lead at a higher level.
- Speak up and make sure your boss and the people that you will potentially lead are on board with your leadership.
- Learn how to maneuver through the new responsibilities that come with a new position.
- Overcome imposter syndrome, the thoughts of whether you belong as you work and interact with people at your new or higher level.
There are a lot of things that happen in the background when moving up that need to happen for you to move up and succeed in a new role. It is not just about speaking up and saying that you want to move up. You have to make sure everything is aligned, and that is where Make A Move comes in handy.

Step 2: Make A Move ON
There are several variables that occur when you want to Move On to another company:
- You have outgrown your current role, and there are no other roles higher than yours because they're currently filled by Legacy leaders that have no intentions of moving ON.
- The culture within your organization is shifting and becoming inconducive to who you are as a leader, your values, and what you want for your career.
- There may be nothing wrong with where you are, but you want to explore another company for more money or opportunities for growth.
Make A Move-ON strategy is designed to help you identify your career needs and objectives based on where you currently are and where you want to be to make the next right step.

Step 3: Make A Move-OUT
When you make a move-out, you’re moving to new opportunities outside your current industry or something you want to do on your own. This can be for a number of reasons:
- You feel unfulfilled and disenchanted in your current career path
- You feel called to do something else outside retail.
Make A Move takes into consideration all the aspects that come into play when moving OUT, including:
- Finances: The fear of losing a consistent paycheck
- Family: The fear of your family not understanding and supporting you
- Future: The fear of the unknown future that you have not yet explored
The goal of the Make A Move-Out strategy is to help you navigate, take the right moves and create the opportunities you want for yourself.

Your Next Step
- Are you looking to change your career, but you’re unsure of where to start?
- Do you go back and forth between different professions, trying to determine which one is best for you?
- Are you trying to follow the general advice of “follow your passion,” but you have too many interests and don’t know what’s best suited for your talents and abilities?
If this seems overwhelming, don’t worry, it’s normal and common to feel this way. After all, there is much to consider when you’re looking to change your career at any point in time – especially in today’s fast-paced society.
Our Make A Move program is designed to help ease this process with an organized and systematic approach to leadership and career development. It follows common steps in helping retail leaders find their dream job and opportunities they want to create for themselves.
